Roger Barth is a chemistry professor at a state college near Philadelphia (a city between Washington and New York). He has a BA from La Salle College (Philadelphia) and a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore). His specialty is Physical Chemistry, the chemistry discipline closest to engineering. He teaches Physical Chemistry, General Chemistry, Chemistry Seminar, and the course he created, Chemistry of Beer. He is developing a research program in mashing chemistry.
Barth is an accomplished, but not a competitive homebrewer. He brews ales and lagers by a full mash procedure. He is married to Marcy, a graphic designer. Their three children are grown. One is a musician/recording engineer, one a materials scientist, and one a nanotechnology engineer.
